Mr. Kevin K. Allen was born and bred in Montclair. While at Montclair High School, he participated in the marching band and the track team. He was also in the New Jersey Prep Symphony Orchestra as a trombone player. He graduated Montclair High School in 1972 and attended Rider University where he obtained his Bachelor’s of Science in Political Science in 1980. During his time at Rider University he became a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity and served as Chief Justice of the Student Court. In 1994, he was awarded a Certificate in Graduate Studies in the field of Public Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Allen began his career with the Montclair Fire Department on May 12, 1980. During his tenure with the Montclair Fire Department he has served with the Rank-and-File (14 years) and the Fire Prevention Bureau as Fire Inspector in 1994 until he was later promoted to the capacity of Fire Official in 1998. In 1998, he was promoted to Lieutenant and in 2005, he was promoted to Captain.
Allen served in the acting chief capacity of the department from November 2004 until he was sworn in as its Chief March 16, 2005. He was the first African American to serve in this capacity and was responsible for the management of 88 firefighters and administrative staff. He also served as he township’s Emergency Management Coordinator. Chief Allen is also a member of the New Jersey Career Chief’s Association, Essex County Chief’s Association where he serves as its Treasurer, Essex County Fire Prevention & Protection Association, National Fire Protection Association, and the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety Peer Review Committee.
As a lifelong resident of Montclair, Allen has also served on the Board of Directors on the Montclair-Glen Ridge-Nutley chapter of the American Red Cross in the capacity of Vice Chairman, township liaison to the Montclair Planning Board, Chairman of the township’s Advisory Committee on Public Memorials, West Orange Construction Board of Appeals, Mentor and Board Member of the Brother-to-Brother program, Member of the Montclair Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Member of the Jephthah Lodge No. 56 Free & Accepted Mason, Prince Hall Affiliate and Member of Union Baptist Church-Montclair.
Allen’s favorite historical figures are President Abraham Lincoln, Former Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and President Barack Obama.
Chief Allen is the proud father of an twenty-four year-old son, Harrison K. Allen.
